Odds & Ends: Mail update clarified; QuickTime performance; Creating hierarchical aliases

Mail.app update clarification The mail.app is definitely updated in OS X 10.0.2 (modification date is April 26 on our Macs). However, the update appears to be restricted to accessory files within the package, not the application file itself. Thus, when you launch the application, it still says version 1.0. However, it is now Build 388; formerly it was listed as Build 387.

QuickTime 5: OS X vs. OS 9 Steve Dockery notes that QuickTime movies played at full screen and millions of colors, on his 366MHz iBook SE, work fine with QuickTime 5.x and OS 9, but do not run nearly as smoothly under OS X. Shifting to Thousands of colors helps somewhat.

Tip: Creating hierarchical aliases Have you tried to create a folder with aliases to other folders and then add that to the Dock? If so, you have likely found that the aliased folders do not work to show hierarchical menus of their contents. For this to work, you need to create symbolic links rather than aliases (see previous item).
