MacAAM in English We have posted a version of the MacAAM application that includes English dialog boxes. As previously reported, this application can reduce the noise of your hard drive.

Have StuffIt components enabled before updating Scott Boettcher found that components of StuffIt Deluxe that are not enabled when you run the 6.0.1 Installer are not updated.

Canadian QuickTax patch coming Wally Cherwinski informs that the following statement is now on the Quicken (Canada) web site: "QuickTax 2000 - For Mac QuickTax Mac NETFILE Update - Certification Anticipated the Week of March 19 QuickTax for Mac is currently awaiting NETFILE certification by the Canada Customs & Revenue Agency (CCRA). Certification is anticipated for the Week of March 19. The patch will be available shortly after certification." [See previous coverage.]

Another smtp.mac.com limit Alastair Jardine notes another limitation of smtp.mac.com (see yesterday's item), as stated in their license agreement: "Sending unsolicited bulk e-mail messages, including, without limitation, bulk commercial advertising and informational announcements (“bulk” means sending the same or substantially similar messages to more than 25 e-mail users in a single day)." This apparently means that you cannot send any message, spam or legitimate, to more than 25 users at a time.

Update: Several readers pointed out that this is more likely a legal policy restriction (warning against sending spam) rather than a limit of the software.

USB-powered Zip drive mislabeled? Frank Wahl purchased what was labeled as a USB-powered 250MB Zip drive. However, when he tried to use it, he found that it was actually a non-USB powered drive (without the needed AC adapter included, as it was supposed to be the USB-powered version). He contacted Iomega and then told him that all "boxes that have a UPC that start with 7 are all in this category." Frank is taking the drive back for an exchange.

Update: David Lerner (of Tekserve) disputes this: "All Iomega UPC codes start with 7 (the first 4 or 6 digits are the manufacturer ID, and Iomega's ID happens to start with 7). We've sold 89 of the USB 250 bus-powered Zip drives, all with UPC code 742709313103, and only two have been returned for any reason."

VPC and NT file copying Jamie Loeb writes: "I have been having a problem coping and installing files from our NT Server on to my Windows 98 drive within Virtual PC 4.0.1. Connectix Tech Support said the problem was that the files were larger than 5 megs. There is a 5 meg size limit on files being transferred between our NT Server and Virtual PC Windows98 Drive. Supposedly they are working on a fix."
