Kaleidoscope 2.2: a follow-up Another datapoint on the Kaleidoscope 2.2 potential problems list (see item last time): Larry Primas writes: "After installing Kaleidoscope 2.2, my Mac crashes every time I drag a folder to bottom of the screen to create a folder tab. Reverting to v2.12 solves the problem." Scott Boettcher suggest that some of these symptoms may be specific to using a particular scheme. A thread on the MacFixIt Forums also covers Kaleidoscope 2.2 issues.

iMac CD Update should fix CD driver stall (but be careful) Good news: In all our coverage of the pros and cons of Apple's iMac CD Update 2.0 (see previous item), we failed to emphasize that it supposedly fixes thevariation of the stall that was caused by the previous version of the driver (see previous coverage). Bad news: another user reports his CD drive biting the dust after applying the update (see Forum posting).

FileGuard and VPC security leak Peter Puggaard notes that, if you are using FileGuard 3.2.3 to protect a folder, be careful if you also use Virtual PC. He found that he could use VPC to set up the protected folder as a shared folder and could then view its contents. The work-around is to put Virtual PC in FileGuard's Unauthorized Software list.

Update: Another reader suggests an alternative work-around: Disable file/folder sharing within VPC. This allows you to still use VPC. You can do this by removing or renaming the fshare.exe and fshare32.vxd files.

ImageReady display bug? Keene Haywood describes a bug with ImageReady v.2.0, as bundled with the Photoshop 5.5 upgrade (we have not had other confirmation of this as yet): "If you have the AppleVision v.1.7.1 extension enabled on your machine and your monitor set to millions of colors you will notice that the splash screen, Jump To button on the toolbar (for entering Photoshop 5.5) and the ImageReady Animation palette buttons are all rendered as blue vertical lines in this new version of ImageReady. This problem disappears if you either disable this extension or you set your monitor to thousands of colors instead of millions. [I am running a PowerMac G3 Beige 333 and Mac OS 8.6.]"

Update: Two readers have replied that they have similar set-ups but do not see this problem.

AppleShare IP 6.2 : Sherlock Share Point indexing Apple TIL article #24964 asks and answers: "I can index the volumes of my AppleShare server, but in order to perform a Sherlock search, I have to be logged in as the Admin or otherwise have access to the server volumes' root level. How can I index the Share Points so that my users can perform Sherlock searches with their own user logins?

System Disk 2.3.1: a follow-up Previously we noted the release of System Disk 2.3.1 (for Mac OS X Server), adding that it was not yet available on Apple's ftp sites. Now it is, at this link. Apple TIL article #60460 adds: "System Disk 2.3.1 supports device 1 (slave) IDE/ATA devices. However, since the installer for Mac OS X Server will use the System Disk application on the installation disc, there is no way to install Mac OS X Server directly onto a slave IDE/ATA device. This version of System Disk is not needed for Mac OS X Server 1.0-2 or earlier."

PB waxy build-up: a follow-up Regarding the PowerBook wax problem, noted last time, Lee Allen suggests: "Waxes are oil based, so mineral oil or other similar product (used very sparingly) should assist in the removal of the wax. Then alcohol can be used to remove the oil. If oil based products don't remove it, it is not wax."
