Apple fixing out of warranty 17" CRTs At least one userhas received an out of warranty fix. Alex Friedman writes: "After reading yesterday's Late-breaker about the KB-article on 17" monitors "popping and cracking," I called apple to see what they would do about mine. At first they were going to quote a repair price, but after I told them about the KB article they decided to do it for free!" Other users now confirm this.

QuickSilver Monitor resolution: gHead tip Wade Maxfield writes: "On the QuickSilver monitor item (see previous), a better alternative is to use a gHead from Dr Bott. One adapter is a lot easier on the monitor port than the combined weight and leverage of two (plus the cost factor). This is also a good fix for running a B&W or G4 server when connected to a monitor switch. It tricks the monitor into thinking that there is always a monitor attached, otherwise the machine won't startup at all."

Outlook 8.2.2 and QuickSilver G4 follow-up In response to yesterday's item, Rudi Riet writes: "I've found that Outlook 2001 works wonderfully on QuickSilver Macs, without a hitch. I'd recommend that users who are experiencing difficulties with Outlook 8.2.2 upgrade to Outlook 2001, if possible. 2001 is a markedly better product than 8.2.2."

Brother MFC-8600 and Acrobat 5 conflict? Erin Murphy has found that the brother MFC-8600 printer, scanner, and fax machine unit, which is supplied with a TWAIN driver, conflicts with Adobe Acrobat 5. Most TWAIN applications operate with the scanner normally, but not in Acrobat 5. She writes: "No matter how many times I reinstall the drivers and reinstall Acrobat software the same error message comes up: could not complete the acquisition because of a problem with the device." Brother confirmed the problem to another reader and said they are "working" on it.

Sony DPP-SV77 driver conflicts There appears to be a conflict between the Sony DPP-SV77 printer driver and both SnapZPro and Kensington MouseWorks. Bob Stevers writes: "After installing the printer drivers, I had to disable the SnapZPro 2.0.1 control panel otherwise computer will not boot. Also, while working with Kensington tech support, they confirmed the MouseWorks problem and isolated it to the Sony-INIT-Loader, -USB-Sony-Enabler and Kensington Startup. They also said they would seek a workaround if possible, but it could take a long time giving they are focused on getting the next Mac OS X version out the door."
