Synchronizer Bug; Entourage vCard Translation

FileMaker EPS Problem Stays A problem printing EPS files in FileMaker Pro, which we previously covered, has apparently not been resolved in the recently released version 6. EPS files print a chunky screen version rather than sending the clear PostScript data to the printer.

"I downloaded the Trial version of FileMaker Pro 6 to test and sadly it has the same problem that 5.5 does with EPS graphics and certain printers. I have this problem on my machine running 10.1.5 and using an HP 4050n Printer," wrote David Maffucci.

FoldersSynchronizer bug Susan Williams experienced some difficulties with FoldersSynchronizer that caused her to lose valuable data. During a routine restoration procedure, the software failed to fully copy critical files, rendering them unusable in their backed up form.

"FoldersSynchronizer had made a copy of my Entourage 'Database' file, which contains valuable e-mail and contact information, but it contained no information (0 KB on disk in "Show Info"). I did a double back up of the file, and the other copy was also 'zero data.'"

Williams said that in correspondence with the developers of FoldersSynchronizer, it was admitted that the application had problems backing up large files, and that the program currently does not perform a file size data match though the feature is planned for a future release.

UPDATE: Ted Conover notes a similar problem with another backup utility, SwitchBack. "SwitchBack was incompletely syncing and scrambling Outlook Express data under OS 9, and providing no warning that anything was wrong. Tech support answered promptly, but said they had not seen it before and did not know the cause. "

Greg Havican says that for problems synching Entourage database files, Microsoft's "Office Notifications" component may be the culprit. "Apparently, Office Notifications causes the database to be open in memory and FoldersSynchronizer cannot close the file before it attempts to restore it. To avoid this problem, you need to turn off Office Notifications before backing up or restoring the file."

Importing Entourage vCards Mike Bombich writes in with a procedure for importing Entourage vCards (used for contact information) into Apple's Mac OS X Address Book application.

"After turning on invisible characters in BBEdit, I learned that the reason that Entourage's vCards do not work with Address Book is that every other character is a null character (ASCII character 0). Apparently Address Book (and probably any other honest vCard compliant application) cannot interpret a file interspersed with null characters. After removing the characters and converting the line endings to DOS format, the file imported just fine. I then wrote a quick and dirty little AppleScript that parsed the files to remove these characters."

UPDATE: Aaron Walker writes "It sounds like the Entourage vCard is a Unicode file. Unicode uses two bytes per character, so for a normal English document (like a vCard) one byte is the standard ASCII representation and the other is a null (ASCII 0). When presented with Unicode files I generally open them in Word and save them again as plain text documents."
