FAXstf and Disc Burner conflict? Mike Treisman writes: "I am running Mac OS 9.1 on a FireWire PowerBook. Recently, when I start up I get a message which says: "STF init was unable to load driver ACD1.DRVR. Replace it in driver folder." Of course it is safely packed away in its folder, and replacing it from a backup makes no difference. I found that the problem arises from a conflict between FAXstf and Disc Burner Extension 1.0.1. When I remove the new Disc Burner extension, the problem goes away."

Update: Lukas Machata notes (as we can confirm) that this FAXstf error message can appear in a< variety of contexts. Basically, FAXstf remains a conflict-prone piece of software.

FireWire drive enclosures compared Barefeats.com compares two new FireWire drive enclosures that use the Oxford 911 chip set and asks: "Which one is fastest?" While speed results were impressive overall, the site notes the subpar performance of PowerBooks - even the G4.

CarbonLib 1.3.1 and Script Editor 1.6 conflict confirmed As we previously noted, Apple CarbonLib SDK 1.3.1 includes an updated 1.3.1 version of the CarbonLib file (not yet generally released for end users). We also posted a reader report stating that the update might cause Script Editor 1.6 to freeze. We now have confirmation of this from John Baltutis: "You can launch Script Editor, but if you try to open a script via the File menu, double-click on a script, or drag-and-drop a script onto the SE icon, the system freezes."

Update: It may be confirmed, but not all users see this. Charlie Saeger and Marc Bizer, for example, do not.

DirectCD and Silverlining glitch? Ward Clark writes: "After updating from Silverlining Pro 6.1 to 6.4.1, I discovered that DirectCD could no longer detect my Yamaha CRW8424S CD-R drive. I was pleased to find that this problem goes away when Conflict Catcher forces the DirectCD control panel to load before the Silverlining Pro control panel. As far as I can tell, both are now working fine. [Regarding DirectCD: I'm using the patched copy of DirectCD because the latest release (1.0.4) from Adaptec/Roxio does not support my new Yamaha CD-R drive. I suspect that the official DirectCD may also be affected by Silverlining Pro 6.4.1.]" [See also previous coverage of DirectCD update plans.]

Corrupt font problem Terry Jackson found that, if he tried to save a document as an .eps, .tiff, or .jpg file from either Freehand or Photoshop, his Mac would stall and then display the selection, in the Save dialog box, in a weird string of characters, starting with the Apple logo (in black). The cause turned out to be corrupt fonts, identified as such by FontDoctor.
