Odds & Ends: DVD Player glitch?; CD/DVD driver slowdown?

DVD Player 2.4 glitch? We have had several reports of minor problems with the DVD Player 2.4 update. Bill Dodson's case is typical. He writes: "On my G4, running OS 9.1, after I installed version 2.4 of Apple DVD Player, the player will not play the disc if the disc is inserted before opening the player application. Quitting and re-starting the player application solves the problem."

Apple CD/DVD driver extension 1.4.5 slowdown? A reader writes: "When I insert a CD of any format after it mounts the computer seems to create an awful lag and everything runs much slower from Finder windows to menu drawing to actual tasks taking much longer than normal. Reverting back to previous 1.4.4 Apple CD/DVD driver solved this problem."

Update: Taz Goldstein adds: "I've been battling this slow down on my 733. I also fixed the problem by replacing the CD/DVD extension. The extension that caused the problems came from Apple's Authoring Support 1.1."
