Hard drive noise; fan noise; more

Dreamweaver and WebDav Thomas Maler received confirmation from Macromedia that "Dreamweaver MX cannot connect to iDisk accounts via WebDav. A possible work-around that you can try is to specify local/network as the access method and point to their mounted iDisk." Thomas tried the work-around; it worked.

Macs "fussy" about CD-R brands? Dave Kitabjian kept getting failures when trying to burn CD-R discs (of several brands including Maxell) via the Finder or iTunes on his iMac. When he switched to the "Apple-certified" Verbatim discs (purchased from the online Apple Store), the burning worked. Not sure how general a finding this is, but it seems worth noting. If you have this symptom, it pays to try switching brands before bringing your Mac in for repair.

Hard drive noise: a follow-up Regarding yesterday's item on hard drive noise at startup:, Takashi Okamoto replies: "What worked for me was starting up from the DiskWarrior CD and rebuilding the directory. Now it's running fine and seems to fix the slow startup time as well." Ken Gray reports similar success with running First Aid from a CD and zapping the PRAM.

Fan noise: another cause A reader notes: "My fan was coming on more frequently than I thought it should under OS X. It occurred to me to run the Unix utility 'top', which showed that Netscape was consuming all idle CPU cycles. Switching to my Netscape application, I found that it was stuck in a pop-up telling me that some site I had tried to go to could not be found (I must have switched away while waiting for it to load, and never gone back). Clicking the OK button stopped wasting CPU cycles and my fan is back to being mostly off." See also previous related item.

DVD-RAM format/erase follow-up We updated yesterday's item on DVD-RAM formatting, correcting an error and adding some reader replies.
