Uninstalling Norton for OS X; more Deep sleep fix and Grappler SCSI card Pete Morgan writes: "After installing the Grappler SCSI update for OS X, the fan continued to run when I put my G4 to sleep. Removing the grappler.kext extension reverted to blissful silence when the Mac is asleep." Yup. We have previously described the same basic solution for deep sleep and Adaptec cards. The only downside is that you can no longer use the card in OS X.

Bidirectional control characters in Mac OS X bug Gabi Danon writes: "I have found the cause for a problem which affects many users of the Hebrew Language Kit: Unicode control characters are included in many filenames, and this causes the Finder in Mac OS X to become extremely slow and unresponsive. For more details and a possible fix, see this page."

IXMicro: okay for X but not 9.2?: a follow-up We have received several confirmations of yesterday's report on IXMicro video cards not working in OS 9.2, but working in OS X. One reader noted: "It is not limited to 133 MHz bus Macs," as was suggested yesterday. Robert Underwood concurs. However, two readers claimed their card was working in OS 9.2

Uninstalling Norton for OS X If you are having problems with Norton Utilities Public Beta for OS X, and want to uninstall it, Symantec gave Justin Butler this advice: "In order to prevent the loading of the File Deletion Services when your computer starts up, simply go to your OS X partition, then go to the Library folder, in there you will find the Start Up Items folder, then find the TrackDelete folder and delete it." You can then simply delete the remaining Norton application software. [See also previous coverage.]

iPhoto prints and windows gamma glitch? James Cook found that the photos in the photo book he ordered via iPhoto were noticeably darker than they appeared on his screen. He adds: "I happened to notice the other day when working with my monitor preferences that, if I click onto windows gamma, it made my screen much darker. On a hunch, I compared the same pictures in iPhoto and in the book and found they matched up. It appears that whoever is printing the pictures may be matching up the photos using windows gamma."

Turning off Universal Access fixes Internet Connect problem? This MacFixIt Forums thread (Dial-up slowness at point of Connect) describes freezes/stalls when using Internet Connect to dial up the Internet. Kris Kunze claims (we cannot confirm) that "Turning off every feature of Universal Access (both mouse and keyboard) fixed this - as well as some other performance related problems."

JavaScript glitch in Explorer Jeffrey Ryan writes: " I've just discovered a bug in Internet Explorer 5.1 for Mac OS X. When creating a user input prompt window, via window.prompt with JavaScript, the message one wishes to appear, does not render on the prompt window. The input field does appear as normally expected, and so does any default value specified. I've repeated this on two machines."
