Audio Catalyst 2.0: Xing replies Last time, we noted James Steele's finding that Audio Catalyst 2.0 reverses the left and right channels of AIFF source files. Xing Technology Corp. has confirmed this bug. However, they add: "It occurs only if Normalization is turned on. We've fixed it and will be releasing an update shortly that fixes this and a couple other minor annoyances."

BeHierarchic 4.0 conflicts? Rich Battin reports an odd conflict between BeHierarchic 4.0 and Norton AntiVirus that prevents CDs from mounting. While not exactly confirming this, Fabien Octave (author of BeHierarchic) reports that he has received other similar reports and is investigating further. Update: Several other readers have now confirmed this as well. Al Hahn claims that "a simple fix is to simply eject the disk and reinsert it. That mounts it."

Steve Kayner reports that BeHierarchic 4.0 caused DragThing to report out of memory errors on his Mac running OS 8.1. Increasing the memory allocation of DragThing may prevent these errors.

Speed Startup linked to crashes in some cases? We have received scattered reports of Speed Startup 1.0.1 linked to crashes on launch of several applications (including Photoshop 5.0.2 and Norton Disk Doctor 4.0.3) or even a startup crash. While most users appear not to have these problems, those that do report them are emphatic that disabling Speed Startup eliminates the symptoms. (Thanks, Roger Rodby, Don Spence and others.)

DV card update(s) coming; fixes QuickTime conflict Rob Repp reports that the Pinnacle Systems Miro DV300 FireWire DV editing interface card is not yet compatible with QuickTime 4.0. Pinnacle Tech Support told him that DV Tools 1.6 would fix this. It is expected by the end of June. A Firmware patch for the SCSI controller may also be needed.

GlobalFax and G3/BW modem Pete Kunasz was told by Global Village Tech Support that GlobalFax 2.6.8 will not work with the Global Village internal modem for the G3/BW Mac - even though the Read Me file says that it will work.

Update: This reports appears to be in error. At the very least, several readers now confirm that the software works fine with their Global Village modems installed in G3/BW Macs.

Mac OS 8.6 stalls: the nanokernal as a cause? A reader was told by an Apple representative that a cause of some of the still unexplained instances of the Mac OS 8.6 stalls could be the new nanokernal. that a cause of some of the still unexplained instances of the Mac OS 8.6 stalls could be the new nanokernal. "In essence, the new kernel will throttle back an application if the system senses that it is trying to grab too much of the processor ... thus you will see a stall for a moment." However, most of the reports I have received do not seem to fit well with this explanation.

Apple for Sale? It's no more than a rumor, but Don Crabb (writing for ZDNet) explains why Apple may be setting itself up to be sold. (Thanks David Altman.)

Scripts to stop Third Voice Last time, we reported on the controversy surrounding the Third Voice software - which lets users "annotate" a web page. A couple of readers noted that there are scripts available that webmasters can use to prevent the Third Voice software from working on their web site. However, Paul Lipps found that web pages that contain these scripts may load much more slowly.
