a. Problem shutting down an 8600? Larry Lloyd writes that SOS-APPL tech support informed him that "they just recently became aware of the inability to shut down an 8600 with a printer attached. I don't know which printers this applies to (but certainly my StyleWriter 2400)." The problem appears to be with the logic board. No other information regarding a fix was given.

Update: Larry Lloyd now writes that Apple came and replaced the logic board on his 8600. This fixed the shut down problem.

b. Info on new Macs To see how the graphics speed of Apple's new 2400 (Comet) compares to other Macs, check out MacBuzz. Meanwhile, O'Grady's PowerPage has information on the forthcoming "Wall Street" superfast PowerBooks. MacWEEK has details on Apple's Mach 5 chip powered desktop Macs, scheduled to be released this summer.

c. Help! lives We previously mentioned that Teknosys, makers of Help!, had closed up shop. It turns out that Total Recall has purchased Teknosys and plans to bring a new version of Help! to market. Details are on Total Recall's web site (first spotted this on MacInTouch).

d. Magic Cookies Jason Snell's column in MacUser separates fact from fiction on the subject of Magic Cookies.

e. NameCleaner 1.6.5 [198K] is out. This utility "removes illegal PC characters, and other unique marks that can confuse the PC, truncates names to eight characters, and appends file name extensions. It will also make PC file names Mac-friendly."
