Oops Call it a pre-vacation memory lapse. Last week's item, titled "Problem (and solution) installing Mac OS 8 on a 7300" sounded like it was describing a newly discovered problem. Actually, it is an "old" issue, posted here back when Mac OS 8 was first released.

Mexico trip postscript I did take my PowerBook along on my trip to Oaxaca. It was a mixed success. At first, I could not even plug the PowerBook into an outlet, because the hotel only had two-pronged outlets (and I forget to bring an adapter). But I quickly found a store that sold the needed adapter. As to connecting to the Internet, the hotel promised a special phone that would allow me to do this (the standard phones automatically rang the front desk as soon as you picked up the receiver and modem dialing was impossible). However, the phone they gave me did not work at all (even for voice) and, after some discussion with the manager, I decided to just give up the effort. On the plus side, despite the warnings about Mexico in general, Oaxaca seemed totally free of crime and I never felt that my PowerBook was in danger of being stolen. For those that know and care about such things, I was there during the 100th anniversary of the Night of the Radishes.
