Mac OS 8.5: Eject and Leave Behind completely gone As noted in a new Apple TIL file (#24745), the Eject and Leave Behind option for floppy disks is completely gone in Mac OS 8.5. I believe in Mac OS 8.1, you could still leave behind the disk icon by holding down the Option key when selecting Eject Disk from the Finder's Special menu. Now even that option is gone. Apple recommends Disk Copy for disk-to-disk copies.
Update: Anthony Saxton notes that you can still leave behind the disk icon: Use Command-Shift-1.

Update: Greg Weston adds that AppleScript's "Eject Disk" Finder command will also leave the disk image mounted. You can make an AppleScript droplet that will do this when you drag a floppy disk icon to it.

Word 98 and AOL Link problem Regarding a previous report that, when using Word 98, a dialog box keeps appearing that requests a change to the settings in AOL Preferences, Thomas Schneider states that the message is the result of a "conflict" between Office/Word and America Online's AOL Link extension(s). It likely relates to Word 98's "AutoUpdate" feature (noted in the same previous report) where Word checks online for an update to its Web page authoring tools. [The AOL Link extension(s) may be removed if you do not dial directly in to America Online, connecting through a TCP/IP connection instead).

Update: Thomas Koons adds: "This is not a conflict but the way AOL's extension works. If it detects a program wanting to use the a TCP/IP connection and AOL is configured to run through AOL Link, then it will tell you that you need to change your settings before your non-AOL connection will work. This message also appears if a program requests a TCP link and your not online even with AOL."

APS, Adaptec and virus on CDs Phillip Terry just received a message from APS that reads in part: "Our records indicate that we recently shipped an APS CDRW Pro, or CDRW Mastering system, based upon the Yamaha 4416 mechanism. Unfortunately, we believe that the recording software from Adaptec that shipped with that mechanism contains avariant of the (AutoStart) virus." APS will be mailing out replacement CDs.
