XPress update coming? Paul Monfils informs us that Quark's Dutch "helpdesk" confirms an incompatibility of QuarkXPress and Mac OS 8.6. An XPress 4.0.5 or 4.0.6 is expected soon to solve the problem (see Troubleshooting Mac OS 8.6 for more on Quark and 8.6).

USB DDK 1.3a3 fixes a1 bugs Mike Barsoom reports that updating to USB DDK v1.3a3 fixed the Keyspan USB card-related problem he had with the 1.3a1 version (as previously reported). Others similarly report that the a3 version fixes problems that had with the a1 version.

Adesso NuForm Keyboard problem Christopher Feyrer writes: "I bought a USB Adesso NuForm Keyboard Model AUK-505 and found that it randomly repeats characters on screen even when I turn off repeat in the Control Panel. Adesso technical support informed me that they had a 'bad shipment' of these keyboards and that they would replace it by the end of July. If you have this problem, call Adesso at 626-855-0325."

FaxSTF Pro and QuickTime 4 If you are having problems with FaxSTF Pro 5.0.3 after installing QuickTime 4.0, re-installing FaxSTF should cure it (just back up any custom preferences files first, as they may get deleted). At least that's what STF Support told Stefan Krause.

VistaScan and ColorSync: a follow-up Previously, we linked a problem with installing VistaScan 3.5.1 to its attempts to install ColorSync color matching software. Dave Boone found that, if he had ColorSync 2.6.1 installed, the problem went away (although the installer might still install an older version of ColorSync).

Installing Apple updates: a reminder A tip from reader Jim Ace: "Regarding reports of the Mac OS ROM update not being installed: I work in tech support at a Mac-oriented company, and what we have found is that people will double-click the installer .smi file and then they'll accept the license agreement, and then see the progress bar that indicates that the checksum is verifying - and they'll think they've done the update when in fact they've only mounted the disk image. They never actually run the Installer."

StuffIt 5.1 included with Mac OS 8.6 Kenneth Kashmarek notes something we had not spotted before: The Mac OS 8.6 CD (Internet Access section) includes the 5.1 versions of StuffIt Expander and DropStuff.
