Consultant import bug A reader reports that Consultant 2.5.5 will usually crash when trying to import files (such as a tab-delimited text file of contacts). Chronos tech support confirmed this bug and said to downgrade to v. 2.5.3 as a work-around.

AOL asks "Do you want to stay online?" too often? Victor Nolton reports that AOL now puts up a message about how long you have been online (to which you have to click OK to dismiss) about every 45 minutes - even if you are actively using AOL. To express his frustration, he has started an online petition.

Unitor 8 upgrade coming Emagic's Unitor8 cannot directly connect to the new G3s because they require a serial port. Emagic writes: "On January 28th we will disclose how Unitor8 systems can be hooked up to the USB ports of Mac and Windows computers. In advance all we can say is the following: it is elegant, it works, it is blue, its name is not Unitor8 and it will ship in late March."

Palmac is a new a web site "dedicated to delivering news, tips, and other info for users of the PalmPilot."

Internal modem for G3s / DVD drives A 56K internal modem (with FAXstf) for the new Power Mac G3s will ship from Apple this week. Apple is also again selling its DVD drive kit for the PowerBook G3.

New PowerBooks coming? Speaking of PowerBooks, The PowerBook Zone has unofficial reports of new PowerBooks supposedly to be announced at Macworld Japan on February 18. They are more of an "upgrade" to existing PowerBooks than an entirely new model, but (if reports are true) it is a substantial upgrade, featuring faster processors, more memory, a 15 inch screen, FireWire and USB card options, and 10/100baseT Ethernet. The net effect is to bring the PowerBooks more in line with the feature set of the new desktop G3s.
