LaserWriter Select 310 and Mac OS 8.5 work-around We have previously noted that the LaserWriter Select 310 does not work with Mac OS 8.5. Dave Johnson has posted a work-around for this problem.

Buz and G3/BW Macs: Iomega statement Iomega has a support document confirming that the Buz does not work with the G3/BW Macs. A solution "should be available within 60 days."

MacInTax and ECN number glitch A reader reports that MacInTax may not support a paperless return using certain ECN numbers. If after filing and confirming receipt of your return, MacInTax tells you to print the paper copy and follow the directions, you must do so. Intuit says they are working with the IRS to correct the problem for next year.

Mac OS 8.5 memory bug MacInTouch has posted a description of a Mac OS 8.5 bug that can cause a crash when an application is launched. Steve Jasik offers a potential fix.

Update: Horst Prillinger has written a System patch program that automatically makes the changes to the System file recommended by Steve. "Use at your own risk, and never patch an original or active file!"

Photoshop 5.0.2 reposted Although Adobe Photoshop 5.0.2 has been out since October, it now sports a February 16, 1999 posting date on Adobe's web site. No words as to what, if anything, is new about this reposting. However, you cannot apply it over an existing 5.0.2 version. (Thanks, Dalius Juronis.)

Flat panel Studio Display: Rev. A vs. Rev. B An updated TIL article (#30460) describes what's new in the revised version of Apple's flat panel Studio Display (that was released when the blue and white G3's were released last month).

SuperDisk update needed for G3/BW Macs An Apple TIL (#58285) notes that the SuperDisk 1.31 driver update (noted here previously) is needed for the SuperDisk to work with Blue and White G3 Macs. The version on the CD that comes with the drive will only work on iMacs.

The Complete Conflict Compendium web site has "added special lists for Y2K problems, and for the new G3 Blue Towers."

iCab web browser Many readers have written favorably about a new Web browser from Germany called iCab. It's still a preview version, not yet officially released. An even more unofficial English language version of the browser has been posted. Wired News has an article on the browser (thanks, Randall Slafsky). What do people like about it? It is small (2MB of disk space and 1.3MB of RAM needed), fast and relatively full featured.

Pentium III hack Wired News also reports "A German computer magazine claims to have found a way to hack the controversial serial number in the forthcoming Pentium III chip. Computer Technology, or c't, says that contrary to Intel's claims, the identifying Processor serial number in the Pentium III can be secretly turned on and off without the user's knowledge by a small software program."
