Zip drive prevents Conflict Catcher serial number input Steven Rosenberg writes that if you have a G3/BW with a USB Zip drive installed, the dialog box needed to enter a serial number for Conflict Catcher 8 will not remain on the screen. Steven says Casady & Greene confirmed this. The work-around is to temporarily remove the Zip drive.
Update: Jeff Robbin (author of Conflict Catcher) writes: "There's actually a bug in the currently shipping USB Zip driver that causes this behavior in Conflict Catcher. Conflict Catcher 8.0.5 has a work-around for this problem, but you should be aware that this bug can cause problems in other applications as well."

Programs that need OLE extensions Regarding our continuing coverage of the Microsoft OLE extension, several readers informed us of software that installs and/or requires the file. These include the Excel plug-in for FileMaker Pro 4 (Will Mardis and David Linder), Timbuktu Pro 4, Microsoft Works 4 (Stephen & Kim Siegel), PageMaker (Ben Herbert) and Adobe PhotoDeluxe (Henry Kim).

Norton Utilities installation glitch Several readers (including Scott Boettcher and Douaze Jerome) note that, as was the case with previous Norton updates, an Easy Install of Norton Utilities 4.0.4 may not install all the updated files. For example, Douaze writes: "The program only updated the extension (NortonLib) but not the applications (Norton Disk Doctor, Speed Disk, etc...)." The solution is to do a Custom Install.

Virtual memory file glitch Dave Kupiec discovered that, if he used an secondary drive for his virtual memory file, virtual memory would not get enabled from a cold start, but would get enabled from a restart. Presumably, virtual memory was trying to "kick in" at the cold start prior to the external drive being accessible. Shifting the virtual memory file to the startup drive solved the problem.

Communicator printing glitch? Jonathan Sousa found that when running Mac OS 8.6, if he chooses View>Page Source with Netscape Communicator 4.6 and tries to print the page, nothing happens. This was with both a LaserWriter 8 and an Epson 3 driver. [We have now received 2 other reports of this.]

Steve Jobs at Macworld Expo; consumer portable expected In case you haven't yet heard, Steve Jobs will be giving the Keynote at the Macworld Expo in New York in July. Everyone is predicting that Steve will use the occasion to announce the much anticipated consumer portable (at last filling in the fourth cell in Apple's 4-cell product line; iMacs; G3/BW's and PowerBooks are the other three).
