MacFixIt BoardScan has been updated today.

AppleShare bug reported Ed Sikorski describes an AppleShare IP bug that Apple confirmed: If you try to delete a bitmap font out of a suitcase file on a server's designated folder (we use a Customer Projects Font Folder for jobs), the Finder will quit (server side) and/or the system will freeze (client-side). It happens in both Mac OS 8.5.1 and 8.6. I am not sure if AppleShare IP 6.2 fixes this.

G3 upgrade and screen "artifacts" Sajid Martin notes that a NewerTech FAQ states that artifacts on your screen after installing a G3 processor may be due to using slower 70ns VRAM. To fix it, you may need to get faster VRAM or a PCI video card. The FAQ has other interesting tidbits as well.

Quicken Reconcile bug? A reader found that Quicken 98 reported that his account did not balance, giving an error that said: "The total of the previously reconciled items in your register does not match the ending balance of you last statement." However, the reader was certain that the account did indeed balance. He contacted Intuit about this. They told him it was a known issue that happens occasionally. The only current work-arounds are to either: (1) Continue to hit the Ignore button and ignore the differences or (2) Export the data, and re-import it.

Update: Kurt Munkacsi writes: "I had the same thing happen to me. Quicken tech support gave me another option to repair the problem. If you hold the Option key while clicking on the reconcile check mark, you are able to un-reconcile that item. You just have to go back to a date before the data became corrupted and then re-reconcile the account. In some cases this is less trouble than exporting/ importing."

HomeLINE for Macs and PCs Farallon Communications, Inc. is shipping "a new, low-cost HomeLINE solution for networking both Macs and PCs over existing phone lines in the home. HomeLINE includes all the hardware and software users need for connecting computers to share Internet access, multi-player games, printers, files and more." Note: It requires a PCI card slot.

LaserWriter printer Option If you hold down the Option key when selecting the popup menu in the Print dialog box of the LaserWriter 8.6.5 driver (the version that ships with Mac OS 8.6), you will get a new item called Preferences. It includes a host options that can be enabled or disabled. (Thanks, MacInTouch).

HP and Epson conflict? I use the HP LaserJet 4000NT. I also recently got an Epson Stylus Color 900N. They both work great! However, I have found that when switching the default printer from the HP to the Epson and then back again, the HP desktop printer gets corrupted and will crash the Mac. I have to reinstall a new desktop printer file to get things working again. As I was using QuicKeys 4 to switch to the Epson, QuicKeys too may be involved. I will be working on this more today.
