Regarding yesterday's item on problems with the QuickDay/QuickContact components of Now Up-to-Date & Contact 3.8:

Power On Software offered an initial reply (with a promise of more to come):

Some calendar files created with older versions of Now Up-to-Date (NUTD) may be corrupted or otherwise incompatible with the new version. This likely accounts for some of the reported problems. To test this out, delete the NUTD Preferences file(s) and restart. Then create a new calendar file. If your problem symptoms vanish, this was the cause.

While the current version of NUTD&C adds no significant new features, it is more than a minor "bugfix" update. In particular, the QuickDay/QuickContact components were completely rewritten from scratch. Power On is working to quickly remedy any remaining problems that are now being discovered with this rewrite. Further, when the Palm conduits become available in 3.9, this will be a free update for 3.8 users.

Meanwhile, we received a few more reports of potential conflicts:

Two readers (Jason Hunt and Bruce Hoffman) report out of memory error and/or freezes when running Excel 98. Disabling the NUTD&C control panels returned things to normal. Similar problems were also reported for Word 98.

Linda Cameron found: "After I installed the NC&NUD 3.8.1 in demo mode, I started having major problems with AOL 4. It wouldn't open emails and wouldn't let me sign on. I turned off the QuickDay and QuickContact, restarted and AOL is back to working normally." Reader Dwayne reported similar AOL problems.

Kenneth Marcus adds: "NUTD&C control panels/menus cut me off from my NetWare/MacIPX network."

Joe Laffey reports: "I have encountered problems with CodeWarrior 5 under 8.6 since I installed the Now Up-to-Date / Contact programs. I frequently get an "Unknown Error 32770" when trying to build. This problem went away when I disabled the control panels from Now Contact/Up-to-Date."

Edward Lovelace writes: "Netscape 4.7 kept freezing on me after upgrading NUTD and Contact to v3.8. I noticed that the installer changed my Internet Config files: ICeTEe (EXTN), Internet Config Switch (CSM) Disabling these files eliminated the problem."

Finally, Matthew Culmore offers a positive assessment of the new update:

"After installing the NUTD&C update and having no problems, I was surprised to see all the problems reported by the others installing this update. I have all the apps running on a G3 Beige 266 that others seem to be having problems with and I even went back a tested my apps (Word, Photo 5.5, QBooks, etc.) and not a trace of their problems. Installing with extensions disabled may have helped avoid some of the reported conflicts."

Gordon Alley concurs: "I echo Matthew Culmore's experience."

Update: John Atwood reports having received two beta versions of the QuickDay/QuickContact control panels (3.8.1b2) which appear to have fixed the conflicts with Microsoft products (e.g., Word 98 and Excel). Expect a public release soon.
