Novell replaced the top executive in charge of its open-source and Linux business.

The company said that Roger Levy has been named general manager of the Open Platform Solutions business unit. He will report to Jeff Jaffe, Novell's chief technology officer.

Levy, who joins Novell from Lucent, replaces David Patrick, who joined the company when Novell bought open-source company Ximian. Novell said Patrick's departure was voluntary and that he will pursue interests outside Novell.

Novell's Linux business is growing but not fast enough to offset declining NetWare sales or take share from rival Linux distributor Red Hat, according to some financial analysts.
