Norton Utilities for Macintosh 4.0: Disk Editor is "lite" version; but other components are "fully updated"

An article in eMediaweekly reported that the now shipping version of Norton Utilities for Macintosh 4.0 is not "complete." In particular:
"A 'lite' and unsupported version of Norton Disk Editor will be part of the initial 4.0 release; a final, supported version will be released later, the company said.

Likewise, planned updates to three other components of previous releases (Fast Find, System Info and Disk Light) haven't been completed. Symantec said customers who buy Version 4.0 before the missing pieces are complete will be eligible for a free update for 60 days after their purchase, or they will be able to order a replacement CD-ROM for $15."

Reply from Symantec Tim Grudniski contacted Symantec for more information about this and received the following reply from Stephen Zeffren (of Symantec's Macintosh Technical Support):

"The article has some correct information but the implications are incorrect.

Main issue: NUM 4.0 is complete and has no 'lite' parts other than Norton Disk Editor (NDE). Since NDE is basically a technician's tool and not a normal part of NUM per se, if it is updated, we'll have to determine how it's distributed. Whether via online or as a new CD. But, since it's not required when running NUM normally, it's not a necessary update for most customers.

In regards to System Info, Fast Find, and Disklight: Neither are they 'lite' versions nor are there any planned updates for them beyond their current release version, unless problems are discovered. They are fully updated and tested for use under OS 8.1 (and basically with OS 8.5).

In regards to the 60 day issue: This is standard policy at Symantec. If you purchase an older product, up to 60 days before a new one ships, then you would be eligible for a free upgrade."
