Speaking of Norton Utilities, Symantec has just released Norton Utilities 4.0.3 Updater. Interestingly, a 4.0.2 version has been available for awhile, although it was never posted online (you had to order the CD directly from Symantec). If you are still using version 4.0.1, here are just some of the benefits you will get by updating to version 4.0.3 (see the Read Me for more details):
  • Disk Doctor includes enhancements that improve repair capabilities and reduce instances of unrepairable errors.
  • Inserting a damaged floppy or other removable disk will sometimes cause the Finder to crash in OS 8.x. With Norton Disk Doctor open, hold down the option key while inserting the damaged disk. The disk will now be added to Norton Disk Doctor's drive list but will not appear on the desktop.
  • Resolved an issue with Wipe Info where we were not able to wipe unused space on a normal boot volume when booted from the Norton Utilities CD.
  • Now includes Apple's USB drivers on bootable CD.
  • Resolves issues repairing floppy disks in Imation's SuperDisk Drive.
  • Bootable CD boots usees Mac OS 8.5.1 and should boot the new blue and white G3 Macs.

Jerome Douaze had a problem installing the update: "The Installer updated nothing on my hard drive until I chose 'Custom Install' in the popup menu after it scanned my hard drives." Other readers similarly report only some of the components being successfully updated by the Installer. Symantec is investigating. Update: Some readers have suggested that this problem may be due to not using the correct installer for the version of NU that you have. I doubt this is the whole story, but it is worth checking.
