Nokia is hosting a major event Thursday in New York City to take the wraps off a new Lumia flagship smartphone that promises to "reinvent zoom."

The event, which will likely introduce the already-hyped Lumia 1020, will kick off at 8 a.m. PT/11 a.m. ET. CNET's Brian Bennett, Sarah Tew, Roger Cheng, and I will be there to cover the news live. We will kick off the commentary about 15 minutes before the event begins.

While the company's invitation to the event says nothing about a new Lumia smartphone , it seems pretty likely that Nokia is using the event to launch the new Lumia 1020, which is expected to offer the PureView camera zoom lens that fans have been waiting for since the 41-megapixel camera was first shown off two years ago in the Symbian-based 808 PureView . This could be the big introduction of the technology coming to a Microsoft Windows Phone.

Recently, a stream of photos taken with the Lumia 1020 appeared on Flickr. The photos were supposedly posted by Microsoft Windows Phone VP Joe Belfiore . One of two photos taken with the Lumia 1020 had a resolution of 2,947x1,658 pixels, while the other came in at 2,352x1,568 pixels.

The new Lumia 1020, which is likely to be Nokia's flagship smartphone, has popped up on AT&T's inventory list , according to reports. AT&T and Nokia have been quiet about the addition, but some experts expect the new device to sell for about $600 without a contract. And the subsidized price could be around $199.

CNET will use ScribbleLive to bring you the live blog with photos from the event.
