Nokia finally ships N8, hooks it up to world's biggest cinema screen
The N8 is being shipped as we speak from factories in Finland and China, and we await delivery. Nokia has also showcased the N8's media capabilities with a big-screen cinema stunt.
After waiting for what seems like two ice ages, Nokia has finally got round to shipping the N8 smart phone from factories in Finland and China. We took delivery of ours this morning and will have a full review for you quick-smart.
Although there were suggestions that the N8 would suffer another longish delay, Nokia has kept more or less to the date it announced some time ago, 1 October. It still may take some time to hit the shops, but if you've pre-ordered, fingers crossed it'll be plopping on to your doormat very soon.
Say what you want about Nokia, is still knows how to promote a phone. It's been pushing the media capabilities of the N8 extremely hard, using it to shoot a short HD movie starring Pamela Anderson and Slumdog Millionaire's Dev Patel.
Another recent stunt involved creating the world's biggest cinema screen in Rosengard, Sweden, powered by the N8's media player. The screen, measuring 51 by 28 metres, was held in place with two giant cranes.
It showed the Prince of Persia movie, and broke the world record for biggest ever cinema screen. A video of the event is below.
We've devoted acres of Web space to the N8, and we're extremely eager to play with the finished device. It has a 3.5-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, with a rather impressive-sounding 12-megapixel camera that can shoot HD video.
The key will be how the enhanced Symbian 3 OS works on the N8, and whether it is good enough to steal people away from their iPhone, BlackBerry or Android devices. All the bells and whistles in the world won't matter if it's frustrating to use.
Nokia has an awful lot riding on the N8 if it's going to make any sort of impact in the high-end smart phone market this Christmas, as it looks like the pretty, Qwerty E7 may take longer than originally expected to turn up.
