Nintendo Wii U price collapses to £149 at Asda

Asda has cut the price of Nintendo's struggling Wii U for the second time this year.

The price of Nintendo's Wii U is falling like a rock. Asda has once again reduced the price of the failing console by £50

The supermarket giant has slashed the price of the Basic Wii U pack from £199 to £149, CVG has spotted, while the Premium pack is reduced from £249 to £199, in an attempt to entice shoppers.

This is not the first time UK retailers have slashed the price of the suffering console -- in March, Asda lowered the price from the RRP of £249 to £199.

In an attempt to explain the Wii U's failings, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said, "We have not been able to solidly communicate the product value of Wii U to our consumers yet, which has been a grand challenge for us."

It isn't clear if this a permanent price change, or a temporary sale, as Asda's website only advertises "33 per cent off all Nintendo Wii Consoles, Games and Accessories".

As of yet, no other shops have reduced the Wii U, though given that most retailers followed Asda and Amazon's lead in cutting the Wii U's price in March, it is likely others will follow suit to shift their stock.

Nintendo is selling Wii U consoles at a loss, with the hope of making money back through software sales, so things are not looking good for the Japanese games company. Due to the post-Christmas slump, only 390,000 Wii Us have been sold so far this year, while last year,  Nintendo only sold 3.45 million , missing its target of 4 million.

A series of high-profile releases, such as new Pikmin, Zelda and Mario games, are coming in the near future, which Nintendo must be desperate to do well.
