NikonScan 3.x will not launch from non-admin account

Nikon's technical support department has confirmed a problem where NikonScan 3.x for Mac OS X will not work when run by a user who is not an administrator of the Mac OS X system. NikonScan will launch and seem fine but will crash with an "unexpected quit" shortly after the user initiates a Preview or Scan operation.

This issue was first reported by Dave Sawyer, who writes;

"This is true for all versions of NikonScan for Mac OS X including the latest, version. My suspicion is that NikonScan attempts to write a temporary file somewhere to which Mac OS X does not give permissions for to non-administrator users, but I have not yet been able to confirm this."

Two currently available workarounds are to either make the user attempting to launch NikonScan an administrator or use Hamrick Software's VueScan - currently at version 7.6.7 - which does not exhibit the same behavior.

In some other cases, the problem can be easily solved by doing a "Get info" on the Library/Application Support/Nikon file. Under Permissions, give "Others" permission to read/write.
