Nikon announces ridiculously long 800mm lens

Bigger may not always be better, though there's no doubt that photographers everywhere lust over ridiculously long telephoto lenses.
Nikon has announced its longest lens to date: an 800mm f/5.6, which offers full compatibility with its FX series of SLRs. Like other Nikon lenses using the F-mount, you can put this on a DX or crop-sensor SLR, or even the Nikon 1 cameras with a suitable adapter. It replaces the previous 800mm lens in the company's line-up, which was discontinued in 2005.
Naturally, with such a lengthy lens, it's going to be suited to those photographers with deep pockets. No official price has been announced just yet, but we won't be surprised if it's many, many thousands of dollars.
Professional photographers will get access to the lens at the Open Championship golf tournament, while members of the general public can see it on display at Photokina — which is one of the world's largest photo shows, held biannually in Cologne, Germany.
