Next in Netflix's originals queue: A thriller from 'Damages' team

Netflix recruits a big-name studio and high-profile creators for another original that appears to be truly original -- a psychological thriller about the secrets between adult siblings.

Netflix on Monday announced the next original series it has put on its slate, a thriller from the team behind the FX series "Damages," set to start production in 2014.

The project, unnamed in the announcement, not only brings more high-profile creative names to Netflix's originals strategy, but it also brings a major studio on board. Sony Pictures Television, the studio that helped produce hits like "Breaking Bad," is producing the series for Netflix.

It's different from the originals Netflix has released thus far in its push for homemade content by being a concept built from scratch. Programs like "House of Cards" and "Orange Is the New Black," which have earned Netflix bona fides for their quality, were based on pre-existing projects: a UK show in the case of the former and a memoir in the case of the latter.

Coming next year, Netflix sci-fi original "Sense8," from "The Matrix" creators Andy and Lana Wachowski, is also being developed without a predecessor in another form.

The latest series from the "Damages" team keeps with Netflix's past practice of the production house holding the long-term rights to the show, giving Netflix a window of time to be its exclusive distributor.

The 13-episode series is set to begin production in early 2014 and will be available in all territories that Netflix operates.

"Damages" creators Todd A. Kessler, Daniel Zelman, and Glenn Kessler called the new show a "tightly wound thriller" that explores complex bonds among family members, and "the rivalries, jealousies, and betrayals at the core of every family."
