MAXpowr 2.0 Newer MAXpowr 2.0 will install MAXpowr software for MAXpowr G4, MAXpowr G3, MAXpowr G3-G3, MAXpowr G3-CC, MAXpowr G3 PDS and all MAXpowr G3-L2 Processor Upgrades. The web page adds: "This installer does not solve the current problems with MAXpowr G3 PDS and OS 9. We expect a new public beta very shortly."

Problems with G3-L2? Several readers have now reported that the update does not work with a G3-L2 Upgrade card.

Kiran Wagle reports that it led to a crash at startup on his Performa 6360 running 8.6 with a G3-L2B card.

Gary Adams similarly reports that his Power Mac 6500/G3-L2 crashed with a Type 10 error as the extensions loaded.

Mike Sellers adds: "I've tried installing the new MAXpowr 2.0 software on my Performa 6400 with a NewerTech G3-L2 300/200 MHz Upgrade card and my computer crashes as soon as the MAXpowr extension starts to load. Running on Mac OS 9 Base extensions plus the MAXpowr extension also results in a crash so I've ruled out an extension conflict.

However, not everyone is having problems with these configurations. Dan Steadman and Jeff Steel have had success.

Other issues Meanwhile, a MacFixIt Forums thread discusses other issues with Newer G3 upgrades.

Update: Newer pulls MAXpowr 2.0 Apparently acknowledging the problems reported here, Newer has temporarily disabled the MAXpowr update. This note now appears on the page: "Incongruent to Newer testing, this installer has proven to be less stable than anticipated in a few specific instances. Rather than allow others who could have same problem download this file, we have chosen to disable this file until the problem is resolved. Please continue to use the previous version of your software in the meantime. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you." (Thanks, Dennis Monbarren, Bill Strohm and Gary Adams.)
