New Zealanders first to get Facebook's Timeline

The feature announced in September has up until now been in the hands of about a million developers and other testers. Facebook today begins its slow rollout of Timeline, which aims to give users a chronological representation of their lives.

Facebook says it has started rolling out its much-anticipated Timeline feature, and the Kiwis are the first to get it.

In an official blog post, Facebook said that "Starting today, we are making Timeline more widely available as we measure speed and other types of performance. We'll begin by making it available to people in New Zealand and then roll it out more broadly in the near future."

Timeline is now being rolled-out in New Zealand. Facebook has not said yet when the entire user base will get ahold of the new feature. James Martin, CNET

Timeline is Facebook's attempt at completely overhauling user's profiles. Announced in September at its F8 developers conference , the feature has at its core one simple idea: giving users a way to represent their whole life in one place.

Timeline is designed to give users a single place to go to see their friends, photos, relationship statuses, and more. These highlights are shown in chronological order, and make it possible to look at a year, or more closely at individual months and days.

Since the F8 announcement, Facebook has made Timeline available to some developers, and it said that more than a million people have already been using the new feature. Now, it is starting the gradual roll-out across the social network's hundreds of millions of users. Facebook has not said how long it will take to complete the roll-out.
