Tatung Science and Technology, one of the largest suppliers of SPARC-compatible workstations and Web servers, says it is the first vendor to ship clone systems based on Sun Microsystems Ultra-2 architecture and 64-bit UltraSPARC chips.

Tatung is shipping a new family of single and dual-processing workstations based on Sun Microsystems' Ultra-2 64-bit UltraSPARC processors.

Four new models in the Compstation U Series will be aimed at use in simulation, analysis, financial modeling and other technical and scientific applications, the company says. Model U2-1170 features a 167-MHz UltraSPARC chip, while the U2-2170 features twin 167-MHz processors. The Model U2-2200 is available with either one or two 200-MHz UltraSPARC processors.

All four COMPstation U Series models include a 64-bit slot designed for Creator graphics cards that can meet the needs of medical imaging, molecular modeling, visualization, MCAD, animation, and video. Customers can choose from 2D or 3D graphics options. A 3D Creator graphics card provides high-speed image processing and MPEG video decompression, along with accelerated 24-bit, double- and Z-buffered 3D rendering.

Sun's Creator graphics delivers 24-bit true color and high resolution graphics as well as acceleration for window operations, 2-D and 3-D graphics, solids, and imaging.

Standard configurations include 128MB of RAM, a 2GB hard drive and a 20-inch monitor. Tatung says the main difference between their models and those available from Sun are drive capacity. The Tatung system can be expanded up to 18GB of hard drive capacity and comes with four drive bays. Other standard features include a 100-Base T Ethernet interface and Fast-Wide SCSI-2.

Base configurations have a suggested list price of $17,130 for model U2-1170, $20,730 for U2-2170, and $24,830 for the dual 200-MHz processor U2-2200.
