New Power Rangers suits unveiled and they look very Iron Man-ish

You probably remember the tall boots and stretchy '80s rock star-style suits worn by the original "Power Rangers." The teen superhero series reveled in its own campiness, but that old look is going by the wayside. Entertainment Weekly on Thursday unveiled the new costumes for the upcoming "Power Rangers" movie due out in the spring of 2017.

The official costume-reveal photo shows five Power Rangers (Yellow, Black, Red, Pink and Blue) striking heroic poses. Perhaps it's the lighting glinting off their chest plates, but the outfits look very akin to the armor worn by Marvel's Iron Man.

"Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that's not man-made," production designer Andrew Menzies told Entertainment Weekly in reference to the Rangers look.

It will be interesting to see if the fresh costumes appeal to long-time fans who have spent years looking at Spandex-style outfits on their beloved heroes. The Yellow and Pink Ranger duds may get some extra scrutiny due to the sculpted boob plate armor and high heels. There are still plenty of call-outs to the traditional costumes, including the large black eye shields, belt buckles and chest diamonds. It's a pretty extreme update, but no more crazy than the leap from Adam West's Batman to Michael Keaton's Batman.
