From an Apple press release:

"Apple announced that it will release its second software update for Mac OS X today, which together with a simultaneously-released update to iTunes will add the ability to burn custom music CDs on Mac OS X. Both software updates will be released at noon today and will begin automatically notifying users and updating their copies of Mac OS X over the Internet during the coming week.

Along with providing support for burning music CDs with CD-RW drives, the second software update to Mac OS X also features improvements in overall application stability and the latest version of the Internet file transfer service (ftpd) which features important security improvements. The update will be made available by automatic software update to all Mac OS X users for free."

Update: The updates are now out. The updates are Mac OS X 10.0.2 (Build 4P12) and iTunes for Mac OS X 1.1.1. If you update via the Software Update System Preferences and want to save the full installer before it gets deleted on restart, here's the easiest way:

    1. Using a utility such as TinkerTool, select the option to "Show hidden and system files."
    2. After the Software Update is finished downloading, installing and optimizing the new software, a dialog box appears with the Restart button. Ignore it for the moment.
    3. Select Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Enter: /private/temp.
    4. When the window appears, open the folder that says 102. [A couple of readers report indicate that the folder number may be 501 (this is the folder number that contained the 10.0.1 update). In any case, open whatever numbered folder you find in this location.]
    5. Inside will be the 10.0.2Update.pkg and iTunes.pkg files. Move them to the desktop - or any other location you wish. To be extra safe, make a copy of them rather than moving them, so that the original is still in the 102 folder, as expected, when you restart.
    6. Now go back to the dialog box and click Restart.

Update: Despite the wording of the press release, that indicated that the updates would only be available via the Software Update System Preferences today, Mac OS X 10.0.2 and iTunes for Mac OS X 1.1.1 are now available for separate download.

Delete old version of iTunes! iTunes is not an updater but a complete application. You can install it even if you do not already have an older version of iTunes. However, if you have an older version installed, the new software may not install (even via Software Update) until you delete the older version. Actually, as several readers pointed out, the iTunes installer should ask you: "An older version of this software is already installed on this system. Do you want me to remove it?" If you answer "yes" the old software is removed and the installation continues. If you answer "no" then installation is aborted.

Update: We installed the two updates and all went smoothly.

iTunes for Mac OS X 1.1.1 adds support for burning audio CDs, the ability to display full-screen visual effects, and improves overall stability and performance. In addition to the updated application (iTunes.app), it adds an iTunes Control item in the Dock (iTunes.dock). The Dock extra indicates just that it can open iTunes. However, once iTunes has been launched, the dockling offers basic controls, such as Play, Stop and Pause. The Control dockling is separate from the Dock icon for iTunes itself. [Note: even if you dump the permanent dock icon for iTunes, it will still temporarily return when you launch iTunes, thus leaving you with two iTunes items in the Dock.]

Lander Salzberg reports good news: "It found my Yamaha FireWire burner right away, and burned a CD with no problems."

We briefly looked at what has been updated in Mac OS X 10.0.2 (we launched the Installer document and used the Show Files command to see the list, as we have explained previously). We found that mail.app has been updated. In addition, there were updates to numerous items in System/Library including in CFMSupport/BridgeLibraries, CoreServices (especially loginwindow.app), Extensions, Frameworks, Printers, and PrivateFrameworks (this is where the new DiscRecording software is located). Some files in the /usr UNIX directory were also updated, as was the mach.kernel file and files in /private/Drivers.
