This time around, Apple is releasing two new iPhones. Today's CNET Update video explains what's new about the high-end iPhone 5S, including a fingerprint scanner and a better camera . But if you don't care about those upgrades, cut $100 off the price with the plastic iPhone 5C.

With the new models, Apple says goodbye to last year's iPhone 5 -- but the older iPhone 4S survives and will be sold for free with a new contract.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 5C begin September 13, but Apple is not taking pre-orders for the iPhone 5S. Those who want to be the first to have the new model in hand on September 20 will likely have to wait in line at a store -- unless retailers offer reservations.

But changes are in store even for those who don't buy a new iPhone. Current iPhone and iPad owners can feel like they're getting a new device with the upgrade to iOS 7 coming out September 18, which will have a dramatic new look.
