And the Doctor's new companion is...Pearl Mackie, who plays a new character named Bill.

Newcomer Mackie joins "Doctor Who" star Peter Capaldi on his adventures in the tenth season of the revived BBC hit show. We'll see them in action together in 2017.

Here's Pearl and the Doctor taking on the Daleks in a new clip:

Hailing from Brixton, South London, Mackie describes herself an "Actor. Singer. General noise maker..." on her Twitter profile, which has just gone from 600 followers to over 6,000 and climbing fast. She has only two IMDB credits to her name -- as "Foh Girl" way down the credits of the little-seen 2013 Martin Freeman movie "Svengali", and a small role in an episode of long-running UK soap "Doctors" -- but she has done plenty of theatre, including "The Crucible" and "The Comedy of Errors".

Mackie is currently treading the boards in "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" at the National Theatre in London. If you can't make it to that, then here she is getting down with her bad self alongside Ben Whishaw, Tuppence Middleton and "Misfits" star Nathan Stewart-Jarrett in the music video for "Real" by Years & Years:

Mackie's name was announced today during half time of the FA Cup semifinal between Everton and Manchester United, shown during Match of the Day on BBC One.

Aside from being distinctly unimpressed with the Daleks, the other thing we know about her character is that she favours Vans SK8-Hi Slim skate shoes, as seen in a teaser photo posted on the show's official Twitter feed before the announcement:

The new companion steps into the shoes of departing actress Jenna Coleman, who joined the show in 2012. Coleman will next be seen as Queen Victoria in the ITV drama "Victoria".

Season 10 of "Doctor Who" will be the last to be produced by showrunner Steven Moffat. After this season Moffat is handing the reins to "Broadchurch" creator Chris Chibnall.
