"We might as well make it a toaster too..." The Seattle Post-Intelligencer recalls a statement from Steve Jobs made during a conference call with reporters last year, indicating that if Apple were to add video to the iPod, it might as well turn the device into a toaster, too. "I want it to brown my bagels when I'm listening to my music," he said at the time. "And we're toying with refrigeration, too." The article goes on to discuss how, despite their earlier entry into the field, Microsoft is already behind Apple in terms of media mind-share for portable video devices. More.

TUAW: Front Row seems custom made for Mac mini The Unofficial Apple Weblog speculates that Apple's real target for Front Row (the remote control system debuted alongside the new iMac G5s) is the Mac mini. "So I haul the iMac out to the living room and place it in the entertainment center, next to the TV. Everything is great until I want to use the iMac as a computer, and I discover that no one wants to watch me type with my back to the room (which is why the iMac was sent back there in the first place). So what's the solution? The Mac mini." More.

Will iPods change the way we watch TV? The Associated Press inquires "Apple's iPod profoundly changed the way people experience music. What will it do for television?" The article also reports on concern from network affiliates who might lose advertising revenue if portable TV watching catches on. "Leon Long, chairman of ABC's affiliate board and general manager of WLOX-TV in Biloxi, Miss., wasn't worried. He said if viewers have the choice of watching 'Desperate Housewives' on their wide-screen television with surround sound or a two-inch iPod screen, they will almost certainly watch it on TV. The iPod option will likely be attractive to people who missed an episode and want to keep up with the story, he said." More.
