VeriSign adding "Wildcard" Record to .com and .net Zones, some ISPs not Happy VeriSign, the company officially in charge of maintaining the "master" DNS lists that equate IP addresses with domain names, launched their new Site Finder software last Friday. The software attempts to steer users that type in a non-existent domain name to "likely alternatives." However, the service isn't free of controversy: It overrides similar services offered by individual ISPs (such as AOL) and individual Web browsers (such as Internet Explorer); users have criticized the service for controlling what they see; and others point out that VeriSign receives revenue from the search engines used by the service. In response, the developer of the BIND software used by DNS servers everywhere hasreleased a patch that overrides VeriSigns' service. VeriSign claims that the patch may violate Internet standards.
