Symantec tries to spotlight Mac Phishing Threat Failing to find traction with its Mac malware tack, Symantec is trying to drum up concern over potential phishing threats for Mac OS X. A Symantec rep says "Independent of perceptions of whether a platform is secure or not, socially engineered attacks are platform agnostic. As long as you are using email on a web browser you are going to be vulnerable, and if you use instant messaging that?s another way that people are trying to get onto your computer." More.

Intel quad-core chips to ship in November eWeek reports on Intel's quad-core processors, which should begin arriving in November. The chips will not be monolithic (four cores cut from a single piece of silicon). Instead, two dual-core chips will ship in a high-speed wrapper. "(Intel) promises that the chips [...] will deliver performance increases of up to 50 percent for servers and 70 percent for desktops while using about the same amount of power as the chips they will replace in high-end desktops and servers. [...] (An Intel rep) rattled off several advantages to the packaging approach, including lower costs and time to market, while reinforcing the ability to deliver large performance gains and still fit into current power envelopes." Opinion: A Mac fan takes on Vista Macworld UK carries the opinion of a long-time Mac users trying out Windows Vista. "f you're familiar with Apple's bright white-and-turquoise look, you'll notice similarities. The open-close-resize buttons for windows in Vista light up when the mouse cursor hovers over them, for instance. When a user account control (UAC) warning pops up - and it will, often - a taskbar icon sometimes flashes with a soft, shiny orange glow to get your attention. Desktop icons are more photorealistic and scale nicely. You can dial up or down the transparency of windows, which is cool, though not especially useful. There's even a 'sidebar' that, while it functions differently than OS X's dock, looks similar at first glance. (The little applications that run in the sidebar in Vista are called 'gadgets' the little apps that run as part of Expose in OS X are 'widgets'.)" More.
