Speculation rampant for next Wednesday VNUNet is one of the many publications reporting on the massive analyst/press speculation Apple has once again managed to drum up for a special announcement event to be held next week in San Jose. "Many industry insiders are speculating that the event in San José, California will see the unveiling of a video iPod. Such a device would be a logical next step in the evolution of the portable media player. Apple started offering video downloads from its iTunes music store earlier this year, and 'video' is mentioned in patent and trademark filings. Mac rumor website ThinkSecret claims to have credible information suggesting that the event will see the unveiling of new high-end PowerBook and Power Mac systems." More.

Comparing the Mac OS X and Linux kernels Writing for O'Reilly, Jeremiah Foster takes some time to compare the Mac OS X and Linux kernels, noting that they take fundamentally different design routes. "Linus Torvalds once called the Apple kernel "piece of crap". Yet today, he develops the linux kernel on an Apple computer. In fact, in 1997, Steve jobs even asked Linus to work for Apple, presumably to fix the crappy kernel. Linus declined, and today we have many diffferent kernels that hackers can hack on as we move forward in the free software eco-system." More.
