September 12th Apple event titled "It's Showtime" Ars Technica reports that confirmation has come down from Apple that the previously-rumored September 12th event is, in fact, happening in San Francisco on September 12th and that the title of the invitation says 'It's Showtime.' "An invitation sent to select media, including iLounge, features Hollywood premiere-style spotlights and reads simply, 'It's Showtime.' The event will kick off at 10:00 a.m. PT." More.

What's happening inside Intel? The UK Times comments on Intel's expected decision to cut more than 10,000 jobs. "In July Intel fired 1,000 managers ? its biggest cull in four years, but possibly not deep enough. Unprofitable units have been jettisoned ? including its communications chip business to Marvell for $600 million. But with CPU prices already depressed and possibly set to fall further (earlier this year, AMD blamed a profits warning on Intel price cuts), Intel is set on stripping out cost of $1 billion a year to safeguard its market share." Sony Appoints Product Safety Chief after Battery Scare SDA Asia reports that, following the massive battery recalls announced by Apple and Dell recently, Sony has handed senior executive Makoto Kogure responsibility for ensuring product safety in the future. "Makoto Kogure, formerly head of Sony's television business, was appointed quality control director. According to reports, product safety was previously the responsibility of Sony president Ryoji Chubachi. A spokesperson for Sony Europe explained that the company already has similar senior positions for product compliance and environmental affairs." More.

Korean Air bans Mac laptop use Macworld UK reports that Korea's national airline, Korean Air, has forbidden the use of Apple and Dell laptops during flights in response to the recent battery recall by both firms. "The ban came into effect on 30 August and is designed to protect passengers from any accidental fires. Apple and Dell have both issued battery recalls in connection with a large batch (6 million) of potentially faulty Sony battery cores." More.
