SANS: Mac OS X vulnerabilities a major threat Security Focus reports that the SANS institute sees the collective security vulnerabilities in Mac OS X as a "major threat." "When the SANS Institute, a computer-security training organization, released its Top-20 vulnerabilities last week, the rankings continued an annual ritual aimed at highlighting the worst flaws for network administrators. This year, the list had something different, however: The group flagged the collective vulnerabilities in Apple Computer's Mac OS X operating system as a major threat. "'here are some people that feel that, if they are running Mac OS X, then all is well. That is no longer true,' said Rohit Dhamankar, security architect for 3Com's TippingPoint and editor of the SANS Top-20 vulnerability list It's the first time that the SANS Institute called out an entire operating system for its vulnerabilities. While the move has raised questions about the value of such a general warning, highlighting recent vulnerabilities in Mac OS X was intended as a wake up call, said Rohit Dhamankar, security architect for TippingPoint, a subsidiary of networking company 3Com, and the editor for the SANS Top-20 vulnerability list." A Linux user's switch to the Mac A longtime Linux user recounts his experience partially switching to the Mac: "In early 2005, Apple was announcing the Mac mini computer. It was the answer to what I was looking for in a computer, so I bought one. This is a report about the early months with my new Mac, and how it compares to a Linux computer. (I have never owned a Windows computer.) In short, I am now both a Mac and a Linux user - Apple gets GUI simplicity, usability, and coherency right, and Linux everything else. When switching operating systems, there is a strong tendency to whine about all the things missing in the new OS, or that are done differently and require a change of habits. The advantages become obvious only after some time. I'll do my best to take that into account and present a balanced review. There are a few fundamental problems that I cannot ignore though." More.
