Safari slowdown? CNET has a blog posting discussing Macinstein's finding of a purported slowdown of Mac OS X when Safari is running relative to Firefox. "Is Apple's Safari browser a resource hog? That's the question posed at Macenstein, which ran tests comparing the Apple browser to the popular Firefox software. The article's author tested his Mac by conducting a series of tasks using both browsers. He claims that the computer performed the tasks significantly slower when Safari was open, compared to when Firefox was open." More.

Ars Technica offers its perspective: "With JavaScript, Safari departs from the behavior in WinIE and Firefox with regard to timeouts and intervals. When a web site defines a timer below 10 milliseconds, Safari 2 actually honors the request even if the request is to wait 0 milliseconds, while the other browsers wait a minimum of 10 ms. So events that should happen "as fast as possible" do in fact happen as fast as possible and use a lot of CPU time in Safari 2, while in other browsers, including the WebKit nightly, the events can't fire faster than 100 times per second." More.

Mac OS infused with tools of the corporate IT trade InfoWorld puts the spotlight on Apple's often overlooked corporate integration initiatives. "The desktop [...] isn't the only place Apple has features enticing to corporations. Mac OS X Server provides file and print, cross-platform management, security, and collaboration features, as well as support for POP and IMAP mail, FTP, DNS, and DHCP. Apple's Xsan and Xgrid add storage-area networking and clustering options, and the server comes with an unlimited client license for no additional cost. Apple also has added such open source packages as Apache, Samba, Kerberos, Postfix, Jabber, SpamAssassin and OpenLDAP; and has integrated them in a unified management interface." More.
