Reuters: Apple may use flash for notebooks Quoting analyst Shaw Wu, Reuters is the latest among many to speculate that Apple may soon utilize flash memory in "subnotebooks" to be released in the second half of 2007. "Wu, who was among the first analysts to forecast the unveiling of Apple's iPhone music player/phone earlier this year, cited unnamed industry sources as the basis for his report. 'The time is right for the flash makers to make a move' as flash memory prices decline, Wu said by telephone. 'Apple, from what we understand, is pretty much ready. The ball is in the flash vendors' court.'" More.

Microsoft pitches HD Photo as JPEG alternative Dr Dobb's Portal reports on Microsoft's new HD Photo format, which the company is hoping will supplant JPEG as a leading online still image format. "Microsoft claims its new HD Photo format allows digital photographers and editors to capture and transmit high quality image files that are half the size of image files created using the JPEG standard. The company also says HD Photo produces fewer unwanted visual artifacts in digital images than JPEG. [...] The format is supported on various Microsoft products as well as Apple's Mac OS X operating system." More.

Archos 604 WiFi Review: "Delivers what Apple promises" CanWest News Service has a review of the Archos 604 WiFi media player/internet access device. "While the folks at Apple are promising touch-screen technology on their upcoming iPhone device, Archos Inc. has already delivered. The 604-WiFi boasts a brilliant, 4.3-inch-wide screen that operates completely by touch. You want to scroll through your music archive? Just swipe your finger down the screen. Want to fast-forward through a movie? Tap the screen and pull the progress bar across until you reach the desired point. Perhaps the most appealing feature is the ability to pull up a full QWERTY keyboard on the screen, so you can enter song titles, name your video files or surf the Internet." More.
