New and Noteworthy: QuarkXpress 6.0 available next week; Apache 'earning its stripes'; Motorola sees lower profits going forwa

QuarkXpress 6.0 available next week QuarkXpress 6.0, the long awaited Mac OS X native release, will make its shipping debut next week. Apple has begun promoting the new US $900 release on its Web site, and through the online Apple Store. A note on Apple's site reads "Like the subatomic particles from which the company takes its name, software from Quark is the basic building block of any print designer's toolkit. QuarkXPress has deservedly gained a reputation for reliable printing, offering consistent and dependable output that prevents costly mistakes. Now you can confidently add that tool to your Mac OS X workflow, because QuarkXPress 6.0 is available for preorder today and runs flawlessly under Mac OS X." More.

Apache 'earning its stripes' Apache, the open-source Web server component used in Apple's Mac OS X, is earning growing amoutns of recognition as a stable, reliable serving platform. "Because Apache runs on multiple platforms, it can be used to consolidate access to Web-based applications running on heterogeneous systems. With other offerings such as Sun's Sun One Web server and Microsoft's Internet Information Server, users typically are tied to the vendor's platforms." More.

Motorola sees lower profits going forward Motorola, the world's number 2 mobile phone company and still Apple's primary supplier for PowerPC chips, has warned that 2003 sales and earnings would be lower than it had expected because the SARS outbreak and competition from Chinese rivals hurt phone sales in Asia. "Motorola had recently said the impact of SARS was worse than expected. Analysts said Motorola in particular is hurt because it has the largest share of the cell phone market in China, where SARS has hit the hardest." More.
