New Book focuses on Mac OS X Security A new book from Cigital publishing focuses on security concerns in Mac OS X. "Mac OS X now operates on a UNIX engine. As such it is much more powerful than previous operating systems. It is now a multitasking, multithreaded, multi-user, and multiprocessor system with enhanced interoperability with other systems. Along with that increased power comes increased security vulnerability. Part I introduces readers to the basics of OS X security." More.

MusicNet jumps on the online music ordering bandwagon In the latest deal in the rapidly expanding online music business, MusicNet said Thursday that it would offer more than 350,000 songs to subscribers in Microsoft's Windows Media format, CNET reports. "Since Apple Computer launched its iTunes Music Store in late April, and proved its potential by selling more than 2 million downloads at 99 cents each, major online players such as America Online, MSN and Amazon.com have said they were more actively exploring their own online music services." Apple in court over Unix trademark Apple Computer is being sued by The Open Group, the San Francisco company that claims ownership of the Unix trademark, for using the term Unix in conjunction with its Mac OS X operating system without a license. The Open Group wants Apple to pay a US$ 110,00 licensing fee. More.

Fighting Spam By Any Means NecessaryThe FTC, the federal agency that is poised to put an end to those annoying telemarketing calls, now wants Congress to give it similar powers to kill off spam. But the Washington Post reports that it's not clear whether lawmakers stand united on how best to fight junk e-mail. More.
