New and Noteworthy: NetZero, Juno extended to Mac OS 9; Apple files form 10-Q; NVidia rejoins benchmark program; more

NetZero, Juno extended to Mac OS 9 United Online announced that it is extending the availability of NetZero Platinum Juno Platinum to the Mac OS 9 platform. "By creating a product line for the Mac OS 9 platform, the majority of Mac users now have access to the company's value-priced Internet access services. NetZero and Juno launched Internet access for Mac OS X users earlier this year. Both versions of the service were developed based on strong demand and feedback from the Mac user community." More.

Apple files form 10-Q Apple has published its latest 10-Q financial form, glazing over new products and exploring some potential business risks. With regard to Panther, the report says "The fourth major release of Mac OS X in four years, Panther will incorporate many new features including a completely new Finder; Exposé, a new way to organize windows and instantly see all open windows at once; FileVault, a new feature that secures the contents of a home directory with 128-bit AES encryption; and enhanced support for use on Windows-based network." NVidia rejoins benchmarking program NVidia, manufacturer of graphics cards for a number of Mac models, is rejoining FutureMark's beta program, which will be instituting a new set of guidelines to more clearly define what optimizations member companies are permitted to make. ExtremeTech reports "With the decision, Nvidia now has the rights to participate in early builds of FutureMark's software, allowing the graphics company to develop optimizations for the benchmarks, if it so desires. However, 'optimizations' have been the crux of the problem between the two companies." More.

An Instant Messager You Can See and Hear Walter Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal chimes in with more opinion on Apple's iChat AV/iSight combination. "Now, Apple Computer, the king of high-tech style, is trying its hand at solving the problem (of poor videoconferencing options). Apple recently released a video and audio version of the iChat instant-messaging software that comes with every Macintosh computer and links into America Online's vast IM network. And, to make it all work, the company introduced a gorgeous $149 digital Web camera, named iSight." More.

New Sony Clie PDA looks like a laptop Another Wall Street Journal article looks at the the ever-increasing power of PDA devices. "Garmin has come out with a Palm-compatible PDA, the iQue, with a built-in satellite receiver for mapping and navigation. Research in Motion has announced a color model of its BlackBerry wireless e-mail device, the 7230, with a built-in phone. Now Sony has weighed in with a wireless PDA that looks like a tiny laptop and has almost as many functions. It's the new Clie UX50." More.
