May the Mac be with you Apple's Pro/Film page describes how 600 Macs were used to clean up the Star Wars trilogy DVD release. "To clean the films (John D. Lowry) pushed high-definition scans of the original negatives provided by LucasFilm through his proprietary software running on 600 dual-processor Power Mac G5 computers, each with Mac OS X, 4 gigs of RAM and connected via gigabit Ethernet to a 378-terabyte storage array. 'We find that Macs hold up incredibly well, much better than PCs,' he says. 'We put them in their own room with their own air-conditioning, as they generate a fair bit of heat.'" More.

ZDNN columnist says Linux may "finish off the Mac" ZDNN columnist David Berlind speculates on the threat to Mac OS X posed by Linux: "The target for desktop Linux is simple: OS X. All desktop Linux must do is aspire to be what OS X is. If it can do that, it will not only upset the 'Applecart,' it will also give desktop Windows a serious run as well. The number one issue working against OS X on the desktop today is cost. We're willing pay extra for an easy to use, shrink-wrapped bundle of hardware and software, but OS X in combination with Apple's hardware exceeds the budget for a majority of users." More.
