Apple's Macworld announcements Not much is stirring at this week's Macworld Create conference in New York City, with Apple only making two relatively minor announcements thus far. First, the company announced Soundtrack, the royalty-free music production tool previously available only with Final Cut Pro 4, will be available in August as a standalone product for US$ 299. Second, Apple announced an upgrade path where Premiere customers have the choice of trading in their disks for a free copy of Final Cut Express, Apple's industry-leading video editing software optimized for DV, or receiving a US$ 500 rebate from the purchase of Final Cut Pro 4. Wiebe offers Serial ATA "dock" WiebeTech has introduced a Serial ATA Dock (SATADock) that allows transfer of IDE drive contents to Apple's Power Macintosh G5. The Serial ATA Dock converts common IDE drives into Serial ATA Devices. The external port of this product is Serial ATA; the internal port attaches to IDE drives. The SATADock will be available at a price of US$ 140 in late July. More.

Microsoft to revamp Mac Office suite offerings While it is public knowledge that Microsoft is conducting a limited-spectrum beta test for the next release of Entourage (which will pack Exchange support), Microsoft Watch reports that the company will make an effort to broaden Mac Office's customer base, by shipping a "Student and Teacher" version as well as a Professional release that includes Virtual PC. What is missing from the iPod? Ziff Davis writer Ross Rubin opines on what Apple could improve in the iPod. "[...] in daily use, many of Apple's other improvements?the button redesign, the clock, the games, and playlists-on-the-go? have quickly became novelties. Call me a child of the Walkman generation, but I generally use the iPod hands-free. Even with the its fast navigation, the thousands of songs the iPod stores discourages excessive browsing." More.
