Jobs back on the job The San Jose Mercury News reports that Steve Jobs is back at the helm in Cupertino after a successful recovery from cancer surgery. "Employees and others who have had dealings with Jobs since his return say he never acknowledges his illness or recovery. He is the same old Steve and just as intensely driven as before." More.

A 3D monitor without goggles PC Magazine reviews the Sharp LL-151-3D which provides 3D imaging through supported software without wearing any special glasses or goggles. "The 3D imaging is created by a switchable parallax barrier behind the LCD panel. When it's off, all the light passes through the pixels and you see a 2D XGA image. When it's on, however, it creates a vertical grid that blocks the light precisely so that your left eye sees only one set of vertical lines of pixels and your right eye sees the other set of vertical lines. By pairing images that are slightly offset, your brain reassembles the images and perceives three-dimensional objects. [...] Some of our observers instinctively reached out to touch the images that appeared to float in space in front of the monitor. Many OpenGL scientific, graphic, and gaming applications already support this 3D feature." More.

Speakers without wires David Pogue, writing for the New York Times, examines the current crop of wireless speakers: "As it turns out, four companies - Sony, RCA, Advent and Acoustic Research - make at least five different wireless speaker kits. (All right, Advent and Acoustic Research are only brand names marketed by RCA, whose parent, Thomson Electronics, inherited these product lines from Recoton, which went bankrupt this year - don't worry, none of this will be on the final exam. The point is that in fact, these speaker sets actually come from only two companies, not four." More.
