iPod juices Apple stock A CNET article covers the ongoing increase in Apple stock value: "Apple Computer's stock has continued to soar along with sales of its iPod digital music player, topping $50 a share for the first time in four years. The stock, which has doubled since January, has risen 25 percent just this month. The latest spike followed Apple's Oct. 13 announcement that it had sold 2 million iPods in the past quarter. Shares continued to climb following Tuesday's announcement of the iPod Photo, which is arriving just in time for the all-important holiday shopping season. Apple's share gain is in sharp contrast to the performance of rivals such as Dell, IBM and Hewlett-Packard, whose stocks have been more or less treading water for much of this year--even losing ground in HP's case." You broke it, you fix it Wired's Leander Kahney writes about the new iMac G5's self-service design: "With its simplified, modular interior, the machine was designed to make it easy for consumers to perform their own repairs. If something goes wrong, Apple dispatches a spare part, and the owner performs the do-it-yourself repair, from swapping out a faulty hard drive to installing a new flat screen. The new iMac is perhaps the most user-serviceable machine on the market." More.

Linux kills Apple? Apple Matters takes a look at the idea that Linux is a threat to the Mac OS: "So why aren't those people switching to Linux at this very moment? The answer is fairly simple: as of now Linux takes some amount of knowledge to use, it is simply not good enough for the masses. Don't misread the previous statement, Linux is a usable and viable operating system. It just requires a little bit of effort to get everything going. At this point the OS X is just a lot easier to get running and nicer to look at." More.
